The Janssen R&D Discovery, Product Development, & Supply (DPDS) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program helps early career scientists gain the training and experience needed to further their careers, while addressing the needs of global healthcare. Janssen DPDS Postdocs work side-by-side with Janssen scientists on innovative research projects and have the opportunity to present and publish their work. They also learn the functional role of scientists in the pharmaceutical industry and receive valuable career advice from mentors while building a network of professional contacts and developing the skills needed to advance their careers.

As part of the DPDS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, we are seeking a dedicated Postdoc scientist to join our Discovery Pharmaceutics team, which is part of the global Pharmaceutical Product Development & Supply (PPDS) organization within Janssen R&D to be based in Beerse, Antwerp, Belgium.

This 2-year Postdoc program will focus on the exciting field of Long Acting Injectable (LAI) drug delivery. Your mission as a Postdoc fellow will be to investigate new LAI formulation platforms and build LAI drug delivery capabilities for conventional small molecules and peptides, for in vivo application preclinical drug discovery and in early drug development space.

You will operate under limited supervision with a high level of autonomy to transform drug delivery challenges into innovative ideas and practical solutions consistent with project objectives. You will be tasked with drafting critical research questions, and with the conceptualization, planning and execution of experiments to address those. Activities in scope will include new screening assay development, manufacturing process exploration, formulation engineering and characterization and analytical development. Additionally, you will be authoring reports and scientific publications and present data to the scientific community internally and externally.

Within this role, you will uniquely interact with several teams in Discovery and in Development. You will closely collaborate with and learn from scientific peers, supervise undergraduates and junior interns, as well as interact with external partners. This position will offer ample scientific leadership and personal growth opportunities through training, mentoring and R&D-wide connectivity.

Qualified applicants will have a PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Sciences, Bioscience Engineering, or closely related field with a strong scientific background in drug delivery. Background in physical pharmacy, enabling formulation technologies, modified drug release, large molecule drug delivery, solid-state characterization, in vitro drug release testing, and/or biopharmaceutics would be highly valued.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • A PhD degree (0-1 years of experience) in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Sciences, Bioscience Engineering, Biochemistry or closely related field with experience in drug delivery.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in small-molecule drug delivery, formulation/process development and/or characterization.
  • Proven track record to transform drug delivery challenges into innovative ideas and practical solutions.
  • Planning, problem-solving and scientific/technical leadership skills needed in the completion of the postdoc project goals.
  • Track record of scientific contributions, including peer reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • On-site presence (Beerse, Antwerp area, Belgium) and hands-on execution of lab activities.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Background in formulation characterization and/or manufacturing process development for parenteral/sustained-release formulations.
  • Experience with spray-drying, spray-congealing, milling, extrusion, lyophilization and/or micro-encapsulation processing equipment is desirable.
  • Formulation characterization experience (including solid-state and in vitro dissolution/release testing) is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is appreciated but not required.
